Tis the season to… detox!
Can you feel it in the air? Christmas is over, January is here and everywhere you look there are detox programs and juice cleanses waiting for you jump on board.
While I do love the good vibes of the new year and the collective motivation to take our health up a notch, I won’t be detoxing.
With my history of dieting and all or nothing behaviour around food, it doesn’t feel right for me, just yet. It’s taken practise to be a happy, balanced eater. And feel comfortable about it.
I want to continue strengthening my relationship with food, listening to and trusting my body. And in general, relaxing about it all.
The last thing I probably need is to follow a restrictive way of eating – even if it is going to detoxify my system! I know for me personally, when I place any kind of strict rules on myself around what I can and can’t eat, it instantly causes stress. Then I find it hard to come back to normal eating once the detox (or diet) is finished without feeling fearful and guilty for eating certain foods.
So instead, I’m going to focus on filling my plate with the most real, whole food possible.
It’s not forced or restrictive. It feels natural. After enjoying more indulgent and dense food over the Christmas period of course it feels natural to want to eat lighter, healthier food. It comes from a place of love and self care, rather than fear, punishment or ‘I should’.
That’s why Claire and I included The Real Food Reset in The Medicinal Meal Plans ebook series. We wanted to create something useful and inspiring for people who want to get back to healthy, feel good eating without having to follow a rigid detox. It’s not stressful or restrictive. It’s flexible and it feels abundant. And it’s totally up to you how you want to follow it.
At the end of the day, my message is to listen to yourself. Don’t get caught up in the ‘shoulds’. ‘I should detox because it’s January’. No! Only you know what’s right for you. If it feels totally right to follow a detox plan or juice cleanse then you go for it! I’m just here to tell you that you don’t have to .
Here’s to a great year ahead!
P.S. Here are some other non food related ways to feel lighter this January:
+ Dry body brushing before you shower
+ Significant time away from technology
+ Spring cleaning you bedroom/house
+ Get more sleep
+ Spend time in nature
